Berani Benjol

As a closure in 2016, I wish to express my gratitude to all beloved friends who have appreciated our work process and artwork I created through ‘Tulisan’. The basic idea to the final result have been created with sweat from all members of ‘Tulisan’, formed by 25 people handling art, production, logistic, marketing, and service.

Similar to many small organizations or creative atelier in Jakarta, ‘Tulisan’ and I also constantly face waves of crisis and mistakes in all forms. I have learnt that each crisis and its related mistakes need to be examined and dissected, so that we can step to a more progressive direction. Through an autopsy of every condition, I have also experienced the difficulty of accepting mistakes as part of life–a very uncomfortable attitude. This approach deforms any ego brutally. It is roughly like an act of empowering myself to fall and get bruised in front of public.

The uncomfortable feeling of being bruised is only an early symptom, but the next step is even harder. The next step is to clean-up the mistakes within ourselves, without judging others. In this period of chaos and speed, it is no longer enough to white-out our mistakes and to revise our past actions. In ‘Tulisan’ and for my personal development, I underline the importance of not wasting time in looking back to our past and in focusing to our weakness, but to transform that very weakness to be our strengths. There are times that we need to wear the mistakes on our forehead until we are able to see through a different perspective that mistakes are part of a moving life which we need to embrace. To be ugly is better than to be banal.

Honestly, this perspective has helped our achievements in ‘Tulisan’ until this point. This organization was not built with a huge capital, nor with a group of scholars with notable academic credentials. However, ‘Tulisan’ are a collective of honest individuals who believe in hope amongst despairs. The values that we uphold are within the substance and the progress. The two stand above classification of ‘true or fault’, which are the by-product of social behaviors.

I was never formally educated to be a writer, a seamstress, a dancer, a painter, or to be a mother of two kids. I developed these skills in phases through a series of experiences, enriched with mistakes. Indonesian language or English language are not areas that I master totally. In truth, there are many linguistic errors that can be noted and mocked at during my daily routines. I am aware that I am a creature that will not escape death, age and declines.

From this point, I pushed myself and my organization ‘Tulisan’ to continue experimenting for an advancement. Based on this committed direction, my friends in ‘Tulisan’ and I often get bruised from our mistakes. It is always better to be bruised than to never try to take a spontaneous leap.

I will never deny any mistakes from breaking some rules of conduct in literature, conversation, design, production, and services. These imperfections are possibilities to be the better manifestation of ourselves. The brother-sister-hood I have stitched with all members of this organization is a solemn promise to present the best to our community and to always consider the minimum impact of our work process towards our environment.

We are dedicated to make better actions by examining all forms of mistakes that are visible and non-visible. I wish that what we will be presenting in 2017 will mark a significant progress, as we stepped into the 8th year of our organization. I wish to allow flaws and diversities amongst us to become contrasting tones of colors which bring a smile to the new world. My hug, kiss, and honor to all our friends who have appreciated our hard work.

The More You Ignore, The Problem Will Closer

1_1200x800

In Tulisan, we always working in small team environment. Tight deadline and budgeting is part of our team.

2_1200x800

We are required to work effectively and efficiently, a checklist is an essential thing.

jou_20161013_btshome-25_1200x800jou_20161013_btshome-135_1200x800

Once in a discussion, Melissa said, “make a checklist is a real manifestation of a good planning. The more you ignore, the problem will closer.”

jou_20161013_btshome-94_800x1200

jou_20161013_btshome-178_1200x800

We all agree with that statement because there are very significant differences between working with and without a checklist.

jou_20161013_btshome-36_1200x800

We can minimize errors and unnecessary process. The work should be done one day could be completed in a few hours.

The Moment of Inertia

Posted on Art | No Comments

lb_fw1617_home_03_05_1200x800 We owe a lot to ourself, it’s time to go after what you deserve.

Spending small moments of time alone—breakfast in bed, reading a book, etc.

lb_fw1617_home_1627sn_01_1200x800

We need to ask ourselves things like: What is my body telling me today? How do I feel today?

When we start paying attention to our body, we can better understand ourselves.

lb_fw1617_home_1627sn_08_1200x800

Once you grow fond of spending time alone, you can start to increase the amount of time on your ‘secret’ activities.

When you are done with yourself, you will fully emerge to engage with others with more energy and enjoyment.

The New East Indies: December Release

Started at the end of 2015, I did research relating to this collection, when I concluded that there was an ‘imaginative vortex’ in the development of our civilization. I tried to interpret the concept of ‘imaginative vortex’ into 6 points of view, 2 of them are Deviasi and Fuga.

lb_fw1617_1626bn_02_1200x802

Deviasi – Metrpole Bag

Deviasi: An attitude in problem solving which was conducted in many directions to reach a higher or a noble vision. I noticed that there was a spirit in our community for a change, where all experiential aspects were redefined. Truth and transparency became an absolute objective, and not a goal of a collective group. I visualized this attitude as a tentacular composition which portrayed an existence with no segments nor prejudice.

lb_fw1617_1627sn_01_1200x802

Fuga – Concerto Purse

Fuga: An attitude to forget perfection, which is hard to obtain, and to see what we have in the present to reach progress. I believed that wishful dreams were never an impossible matter. If it became difficult to accomplish the dream, we just had to repaint our dreams. I visualized this attitude with a composition of pen scratches, chaotically overlapping each other between dreams and realities.
