Tari Pulsar: 3/3

LB_FW1617_ALL_08_1200x802

“… The dance between the earth and mankind was a fairy tale of love with a musical composition named ‘Fuga’ where all of the notes were stacking over, chasing, and calling on each other. This transcendental melody escorted a messed-up condition which was extremely concrete and unsweetened. Through these notes, my ears perceived a call to dismantle the robe of romanticism which often pictured a perfection so hard to attain in this age–a summons so my tomorrow could yield a plate of magical tones. Through the telescope of ‘Fuga’, my soul captured an authentic personality which no longer wears the veil of mere beauty.

LB_FW1617_1626TS_02_1200x802

…For as long as this pulsar dance continued to pulsate, I had to carefully examine the chronology of events in the shape of a dynamic rotation to conclude thousands of new concepts presenting many probabilities capable of penetrating through all directions. When this dynamic rotation came to an end, a bunch of connections would cross each other into knots. During this tangled fiasco, all sorts of seeds forming new unity were possible. Horrible events would disappear from memory and history would only speak of an amazing contemporary artwork. This evaluation is my personal method in formulating precise problem solving. I related this method to ‘Deviasi’ movement in a war strategy–a mindset dispersing in all directions to gain a noble vision.” –Excerpt from Surat No. 1, Melissa Sunjaya.

Nesting Place

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_07_1200x800Hi, I’m Fani.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_07_1200x800

Since I started working in Tulisan, I have spent numerous hours discussing projects in Melissa’s own house which also served as her art studio. She treats her Tulisan team in kinship. We would be having breakfast, lunch and coffees together like a family. Among this tight working team, we would share many touches of laughter while tackling deadlines.

LB_FW1617_HOME_05_02_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_05_01_1200x800I rent a 4×5 square meter urban room in South Jakarta, not far from my office. It is a simple space with tiny ventilation panels giving it a descent natural light source. I often wonder how to redecorate this space without spending an excessive budget and a huge effort.LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_012_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_015_1200x800

One rainy afternoon as Melissa was working on her household responsibilities, I asked her for some tips on decorating rooms. So she took me to see her room. To my surprise, her bedroom was humble, yet warm and cozy. She loves spending time at home, and especially a lot of ‘me time’ in this room for reading, writing, and drinking tea.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_010_1200x800Her bare room was filled with only the basic sleeping necessities, such as a low mattress, a colonial arm chair, a reading lamp, candles, and a ladder as hangers. Her handwriting over the mattress gave the space a very poetic touch, like a lullaby before bedtime.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_02_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_018_800x1200

Melissa suggested me to redecorate my room with a limited colour palette of white and grey, making the creative process easier and giving a lasting satisfaction. The neutral tones made the room more spacious and friendly for the soul. Her bedroom was overall covered in neutral coloured linens, then vibrantly accented with Tulisan’s home collections.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_01_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_010_1200x800

I discovered a couple of unique ideas for my own space. As an example, the tea towel could be used as an interchangeable wall decoration and as a seat cover. The car organizer could also be hanged on the wall to organize tissue, books, and notes.

LB_FW1617_HOME_05_07_1200x800

I felt inspired that day because her decorating tips were easy to apply. A pleasant atmosphere doesn’t have to be expensive.

I hope you have a great day,

Duet in Art

JOU_20160831_KT-60_1200x800

For Tulisan’s collection, titled ‘PULSAR DANCE’, our founding artist Melissa Sunjaya worked a long way to visualize an emotional connection between mankind and the planet Earth.

JOU_20160831_KT-10_1200x800

From the start, she had imagined this concept to be expressed through a contemporary body exploration. Contemporary dance was a foreign discipline for her. Furthermore, learning this skill at 42 years of age was not an easy start.

JOU_20160831_KT-98_1200x800

Her essay stated her point of view that everything was possible in this universe and even chaos could open up new pathways for potential. So despite any technical disadvantage that she may have, she began studying contemporary dance with a professional dancer & choreographer, Davit Fitrik.

JOU_20160831_KT-105_1200x800

‘Pulsar Dance’ showcased a collaboration of two artists from contrasting creative disciplines and different skill levels, in performing art and visual art. In this duet, the two artists were challenged to synchronize their languages into a poetic movement conveying the relationship between human and mother Earth.

JOU_20160831_KT-54_1200x800

It took almost 8 months of strict diet and intensive physical training for Melissa to condition her body for this challenge. It was important for her to be able to balance Davit’s 20 years experience as a professional dancer. In turn, Davit also submersed himself in Melissa’s essay, ‘Pulsar Dance’, with all its visual interpretation.

JOU_20160831_KT-90_1200x800

It was important to understand that the goal was never to match one another in capacity, but to convey a symbiosis of trust and complementing potentials. This was the essence of the collaboration. This perspective should ideally be the shape of human bond to his habitat.

JOU_20160831_KT-18_1200x800

Davit is certain that it is not easy to be a dancer or an artist. “We cannot only copy a movement or a drawing, we have to first understand the substance that we want to express. As a dancer, I have to be aware of the mechanics of my own body and the energy source of every movement. The dynamic projection has to come from the soul”, Davit explained.

Tari Pulsar: 2/3

Chemist Bag: Deformasi - Yellow Sunflower

Chemist Bag: Deformasi – Yellow Sunflower

“In this pseudo-dream, my position as Earth and human was often a blur, even a blend of the two. Both roles could be discerned by all my senses. Like a scar inside my head, I recalled the moment Mother Earth uttered, “My universe is far different than that of this human which is presently rotating on its own axis with a virtual speed stronger than what his ratio is able to grasp. However if his determined heart is prepared to erase our differences, my every joint too is capable in repainting this dance. Only for him, I wish to create a fantasy, colored by countless leaps of possibility. In silence, I await a signal to construct a new world which cannot be seen by prejudiced eyes.”

Chemist Bag: Transgresi - Red Sangria

These catastrophic eruptions prompting reformation to the Earth’s contours became the solo direction in sustaining this pulsar dance. This was the essential part of the relationship between Earth and humans. The nature of these calamities was also very temporary. Every deformation or disorder must be appreciated as a catalyst driving us to a higher position. The most challenging thing to me was the deformation of the mind. The ‘Deformasi’ of self which examined every imperfection and undressed every defect would definitely shock many faces. Through the transparency of this approach, the vanity of individualism was deliberately sabotaged in order to become aware of the importance of taking down the ego, destroying old masks, and forming a fresh character.” –Excerpt from Surat No. 1, Melissa Sunjaya.

Space In Your Home

LB_FW1617_HOME_04_07_1200x800

It happens to all of us: you walk into a Tulisan store, fall completely in love with some gorgeous of art and have to take it home, only to realise that it’s not the right fit. For one reason or another, Tulisan has some sizes for your wall, giclée in petite to master size.

Cushion Cover: Filogenesis & Tessitura

It’s important to remember that decorating is personal. At the end of the day, your opinion is what matters most. Simply adding art to an empty space, pick something that speaks to you. From there you can make sure that it chances. Chances are if you like it, it will.

Empty wall deserves grand and glorious for wall decor. This way your room won’t get lost or look misplaced.

You can also use moderately in the same theme or colour to create a stunning gallery wall.

Tessitura – Blue Note

“The fate of the orangutans, who have gradually been deprived of their living habitat, did not affect how I slept, primped, or ate. At least, I was this naive when I first received data showing that the orangutans were on the border of extinction. In 2016, their population had reached a critical point, around 55,000 of the Pongo Pygmaeus species which settled in Kalimantan and only 200 of the Pongo Abelii which still survived in the Sumatran rainforests. Including myself, hardly anyone panicked due to the fate of these orange-scarlet haired creatures with intelligence and behavior almost identical to those of humans. Its enormous head and robust demeanor with a height of almost 1.5 meters surely did not have to scare me. Even with their huge teeth, they were not beastly predators. They only consumed honey, mushrooms, nectar, and other plants. With their sensitive intuition, they would only attack humans if we were to upset their lives.

LB_FW1617_1623NF_04_1200x801

Skipper Bag – Tessitura, Nero Forest

The endless and unruly forest fires in Indonesia had impelled me to imagine if my home were to be set on fire by an inconsiderate neighbor; if I were to moan in pain due to the heat of the surrounding flames; if I were to have a defective respiratory system due to heavy smoke pollution; if I were to lose all my family; and if I were to live all alone in this world. If all of these things happened to me, I would definitely go crazy in one day. Facing an unbalanced gender population, these rainforest inhabitants would suffer a breeding depression, where their successors would no longer have the vigorous genetics necessary in order to survive in their natural domain. Extinction would eventually take place. Without these orangutans, I was still curious about how much this fact would alter my personal life.” Excerpt from Surat Pertama, Melissa Sunjaya.

The New East Indies: December Release

Started at the end of 2015, I did research relating to this collection, when I concluded that there was an ‘imaginative vortex’ in the development of our civilization. I tried to interpret the concept of ‘imaginative vortex’ into 6 points of view, 2 of them are Deviasi and Fuga.

lb_fw1617_1626bn_02_1200x802

Deviasi – Metrpole Bag

Deviasi: An attitude in problem solving which was conducted in many directions to reach a higher or a noble vision. I noticed that there was a spirit in our community for a change, where all experiential aspects were redefined. Truth and transparency became an absolute objective, and not a goal of a collective group. I visualized this attitude as a tentacular composition which portrayed an existence with no segments nor prejudice.

lb_fw1617_1627sn_01_1200x802

Fuga – Concerto Purse

Fuga: An attitude to forget perfection, which is hard to obtain, and to see what we have in the present to reach progress. I believed that wishful dreams were never an impossible matter. If it became difficult to accomplish the dream, we just had to repaint our dreams. I visualized this attitude with a composition of pen scratches, chaotically overlapping each other between dreams and realities.

Curatorial Statement

Melissa Sunjaya

Melissa Sunjaya

The New East Indies

The New East Indies presents an anthology of literature and artworks by Melissa Sunjaya, which examine the present state of Indonesian civilization and its potential future transformation. Traditionally, civilization has been interpreted through a distinct methodology based on human tendencies in viewing various problems and solutions through emotions, language, culture, art, and science.

The digital era has opened the door to a world without limits, where each individual is able to access a seemingly endless assortment of information rapidly from this secondary cyber-universe. Concurrently, advances in transportation technology have made it possible to travel thousands of miles in a single day. The two sectors have greatly accelerated the progress of our civilization. Yet one thing remains certain: there are discernible tradeoffs occurring alongside our technological advances. This acceleration has diminished our connection to the natural world and cultivated a civilization which produces pollution in abundance.

The opening collection from the New East Indies ponders the awareness needed to maintain harmony between humans and Mother Earth. This outlook is relayed through the artist’s reflections on modern environmental problems and their imaginable solutions. The collection reflects the artist’s frame of mind in regards to the ultimate potential of this era.
