“… The dance between the earth and mankind was a fairy tale of love with a musical composition named ‘Fuga’ where all of the notes were stacking over, chasing, and calling on each other. This transcendental melody escorted a messed-up condition which was extremely concrete and unsweetened. Through these notes, my ears perceived a call to dismantle the robe of romanticism which often pictured a perfection so hard to attain in this age–a summons so my tomorrow could yield a plate of magical tones. Through the telescope of ‘Fuga’, my soul captured an authentic personality which no longer wears the veil of mere beauty.

LB_FW1617_1626TS_02_1200x802

…For as long as this pulsar dance continued to pulsate, I had to carefully examine the chronology of events in the shape of a dynamic rotation to conclude thousands of new concepts presenting many probabilities capable of penetrating through all directions. When this dynamic rotation came to an end, a bunch of connections would cross each other into knots. During this tangled fiasco, all sorts of seeds forming new unity were possible. Horrible events would disappear from memory and history would only speak of an amazing contemporary artwork. This evaluation is my personal method in formulating precise problem solving. I related this method to ‘Deviasi’ movement in a war strategy–a mindset dispersing in all directions to gain a noble vision.” –Excerpt from Surat No. 1, Melissa Sunjaya.

Nesting Place

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_07_1200x800Hi, I’m Fani.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_07_1200x800

Since I started working in Tulisan, I have spent numerous hours discussing projects in Melissa’s own house which also served as her art studio. She treats her Tulisan team in kinship. We would be having breakfast, lunch and coffees together like a family. Among this tight working team, we would share many touches of laughter while tackling deadlines.

LB_FW1617_HOME_05_02_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_05_01_1200x800I rent a 4×5 square meter urban room in South Jakarta, not far from my office. It is a simple space with tiny ventilation panels giving it a descent natural light source. I often wonder how to redecorate this space without spending an excessive budget and a huge effort.LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_012_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_015_1200x800

One rainy afternoon as Melissa was working on her household responsibilities, I asked her for some tips on decorating rooms. So she took me to see her room. To my surprise, her bedroom was humble, yet warm and cozy. She loves spending time at home, and especially a lot of ‘me time’ in this room for reading, writing, and drinking tea.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_010_1200x800Her bare room was filled with only the basic sleeping necessities, such as a low mattress, a colonial arm chair, a reading lamp, candles, and a ladder as hangers. Her handwriting over the mattress gave the space a very poetic touch, like a lullaby before bedtime.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1625RS_02_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_018_800x1200

Melissa suggested me to redecorate my room with a limited colour palette of white and grey, making the creative process easier and giving a lasting satisfaction. The neutral tones made the room more spacious and friendly for the soul. Her bedroom was overall covered in neutral coloured linens, then vibrantly accented with Tulisan’s home collections.

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_01_1200x800

LB_FW1617_HOME_1624YS_010_1200x800

I discovered a couple of unique ideas for my own space. As an example, the tea towel could be used as an interchangeable wall decoration and as a seat cover. The car organizer could also be hanged on the wall to organize tissue, books, and notes.

LB_FW1617_HOME_05_07_1200x800

I felt inspired that day because her decorating tips were easy to apply. A pleasant atmosphere doesn’t have to be expensive.

I hope you have a great day,

Space In Your Home

LB_FW1617_HOME_04_07_1200x800

It happens to all of us: you walk into a Tulisan store, fall completely in love with some gorgeous of art and have to take it home, only to realise that it’s not the right fit. For one reason or another, Tulisan has some sizes for your wall, giclée in petite to master size.

It’s important to remember that decorating is personal. At the end of the day, your opinion is what matters most. Simply adding art to an empty space, pick something that speaks to you. From there you can make sure that it chances. Chances are if you like it, it will.

Empty wall deserves grand and glorious for wall decor. This way your room won’t get lost or look misplaced.

Tessitura – Blue Note

“The fate of the orangutans, who have gradually been deprived of their living habitat, did not affect how I slept, primped, or ate. At least, I was this naive when I first received data showing that the orangutans were on the border of extinction. In 2016, their population had reached a critical point, around 55,000 of the Pongo Pygmaeus species which settled in Kalimantan and only 200 of the Pongo Abelii which still survived in the Sumatran rainforests. Including myself, hardly anyone panicked due to the fate of these orange-scarlet haired creatures with intelligence and behavior almost identical to those of humans. Its enormous head and robust demeanor with a height of almost 1.5 meters surely did not have to scare me. Even with their huge teeth, they were not beastly predators. They only consumed honey, mushrooms, nectar, and other plants. With their sensitive intuition, they would only attack humans if we were to upset their lives.

LB_FW1617_1623NF_04_1200x801

Skipper Bag – Tessitura, Nero Forest

The endless and unruly forest fires in Indonesia had impelled me to imagine if my home were to be set on fire by an inconsiderate neighbor; if I were to moan in pain due to the heat of the surrounding flames; if I were to have a defective respiratory system due to heavy smoke pollution; if I were to lose all my family; and if I were to live all alone in this world. If all of these things happened to me, I would definitely go crazy in one day. Facing an unbalanced gender population, these rainforest inhabitants would suffer a breeding depression, where their successors would no longer have the vigorous genetics necessary in order to survive in their natural domain. Extinction would eventually take place. Without these orangutans, I was still curious about how much this fact would alter my personal life.” Excerpt from Surat Pertama, Melissa Sunjaya.

A Life Honoured and Remembered

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-5

In loving memory of
Professor Dr. Burton Nathan Raffel
a translator, a poet and a teacher of literature and humanity
(April 27, 1928 – September 29, 2015)

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-15

In March of 2015, I was fortunate to meet Dr. Burton Raffel, who translated Chairil Anwar’s work into English. Having read his book The Voice of the Night: Complete Poetry and Prose of Chairil Anwar, I sought to talk to the man who had so eloquently translated the work of the brilliant Indonesian poet. I contacted him and to my delight, shortly thereafter, Burton welcomed me to Louisiana, where over the course of four days he shared with me his unparalleled insight.

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-36

Burton and his wife, Elizabeth, gave me a tour around their home in Lafayette, Louisiana, which showcased over 15,000 books. Many of the volumes in his vast personal library were his own work (translation and non-translation).

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-10

In his lifetime, Burton had spoken eight languages, including Bahasa Indonesia which he learnt during his stay in Makassar in 1953 to 1955. This man had given me a very personal and inspiring view on Chairil Anwar.

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-11

From Burton, I discovered that Chairil Anwar was a passionate artist. Anwar’s work had presented a new paradigm in Bahasa Indonesia through many hard work and daring experiments which broke the conventional way of thinking during his time.

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-29

Before I left Lafayette, Burton and Elizabeth gave me dozens of books, amongst which were rare classical books of Indonesian literature: Penjair dan Sandjak by Bakri Siregar, Surat Kertas Hijau by Sitor Situmorang, Zaman Baru by Sitor Situmorang, Wadjah Tak Bernama by Sitor Situmorang, Chairil Anwar: Pelopor Angkatan ’45 by H.B. Jassin, and many more treasures.

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-51

It is difficult to track down the original versions of Anwar’s poetry due to the changing nature of the Indonesian language. In addition, references/sources regarding his work are not readily available and editorial liberties have been taken over the years as his works have been republished. Due to these circumstances, I am deeply grateful to Burton Raffel for graciously allowing me to use his translations for the Bio Fantasy Project.

1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-18 1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-55 1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-41 1200_JOU_150302_RAFFEL-14

Burton Raffel is a literary scholar and master. His knowledge of the mechanics and pathways of language have taken many forms over the decades. From translating epic poems like Beowulf to canonical novels like Don Quixote and The Divine Comedy, he has time and again made great writers accessible to younger generations. His deep understanding of the complexities of language are evident in his translations, which element-by-element follow their original texts. In this way he has made Anwar’s words as impactful in English as they are in Indonesian.

Warmest regards,
Melissa Sunjaya

{ Bio Fantasy Preface by Burton Raffel }

I have never changed my mind about Chairil Anwar’s achievement and what I very clearly still see as his never-threatened literary status. There is of course no doubt that he was not entirely sane, nor that he gave no more than a dime to his (or to any) society’s concerns. Poetry, considered completely, was essentially all he really cared about. Indonesia has had some very fine poets but very few poets can achieve what Anwar’s poetry most certainly did. Very few poets in any culture ever will.

Kalau sampai waktuku
‘Ku mau tak seorang ‘kan meraju
Tidak djuga kau

These are the first three lines of an Anwar poem entitled Aku [Me],
which I long ago translated:

When my time comes
I want to hear no one’s cries
Nor yours either.

This is precisely the carefully composed poetry that only immensely powerful poets can produce. You are able to see this fact beautifully set together with the illustrations provided by Melissa Sunjaya – designer, painter, poet, and more.

Pink Courage

Posted on Life | No Comments

1200_EDT_151001_Life_07

1200_EDT_151001_Life_05

Along the journey to love ourselves, first we have to be aware of the facts and understand our options to help us respond better. It is necessary for us to grasp the big picture so we can work on our next action.

As a child, I was very close to my grand mother, Sunarti Hersubeno. She once told me of her miraculous victory over cancer. At her mid-thirties, my grand mother was diagnosed with cancer in a late stage. After two operations and several radiation treatments, the doctors had informed her family that she had only less than a year to live. Shortly after this diagnostic, she discovered a book, titled ‘Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures’ written by Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy in 1875.

Mrs. Eddy explained about our true identity as a spiritual being and its power in boundless possibilities. One of my favorite passage from this book is: ‘Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals.’ The understanding of this Divine Love had freed my grandmother from cancer. My grandmother wrote in an article regarding her healing, ’I suddenly realized that we must face courageously all the mountains of problems standing before us, with no doubt whatsoever that we are able to climb up to the top of the mountain and thus master the problems.’

As a spiritual healer and happy seamstress, my grand mother lived a healthy and fulfilling life until the age of 68. She had helped me in overcoming my worst fears, mental traumas, and childhood illnesses. I called her ‘mbahtik’ (short for: ‘mbah cantik‘ = ‘pretty grandma’) because she was a beautiful soul. I love her and I miss her dearly.

Triple kisses, M. S.

A Hope to Many

Posted on Life | No Comments

1200_JOU_150925_DrMaria_1

dr. Maria Witjaksono is one of the few doctors in Indonesia who specializes in palliative care. For patients with serious illnesses, like cancer, palliative care focuses not on curing the disease, but on improving the quality of life for both the patient and their loved ones.

My good friend Evie Karsoho invited me to chat with her and dr. Maria at the Dharmais Cancer Center in Slipi to better understand the benefits and implications of this type of healthcare.

A recent article by the Ministry of Health revealed that the cancer incidence rates are on the rise. There were approximately 330,000 people living with cancer back in 2013 and the numbers have continued to increase each year.

1200_JOU_150925_DrMaria_2

“It is important that we become aware of the facts regarding breast cancer and understand that there are options to fight it,” explained dr. Maria Witjaksono. For the patients dr. Maria cares for, fighting cancer doesn’t necessarily involve curing the disease, but rather finding relief from the pain, stress, and mental anguish that the illness entails.

Every day, dr. Maria dedicates her time to palliative care beginning at 6:30 every morning and often finishes around midnight. With the help of a team of nurses, she provides care to an average of 12 patients per day, spending at least one hour with each. For over 15 years dr. Maria has dedicated her time and services to providing this specialized healthcare.

With palliative care, the practitioner takes into consideration not only the patient’s medical condition but also other important aspects of their life such as their family situation, financial needs, and their psychological well-being. It is a personalized approach, regardless of the medical diagnosis.

1200_JOU_150925_DrMaria_4

“My role as palliative care physician is not only for those who has no access to treatment, but also to support those who are receiving cancer treatment, so that their quality of life can be maintained or improved. We address their psychological distress, social difficulties and spiritual concerns. For those whose physical states are too weak or too sensitive to undergo cancer treatments, we provide special care for them so that they can live with better conditions.”
– dr. Maria Witjaksono

dr. Maria was first introduced to this type of treatment while working at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the USA. Upon returning to Indonesia, she recognized that palliative care could provide vital support to the increasing number of people diagnosed with cancer.

1200_JOU_150925_DrMaria_3

dr. Maria’s work in palliative care brings hope to many people in Indonesia. It is for this very reason that Evie and I decided to assist dr. Maria’s ongoing efforts with a special exhibition that will take place at Monolog in Plaza Senayan during the month of October 2015. This exhibition is dedicated to “Life in Pink” – a breast cancer awareness campaign, featuring 6 art editions from my Bio Fantasy collection. All proceeds will be donated to dr. Maria Witjaksono’s palliative care services for breast cancer patients who do not have access to proper healthcare in Indonesia.

Tripple kisses, M. S.

Melissa Sunjaya at Ideafest 2015

Posted on Art, Life, Studio | No Comments

Ideafest01

“Idea is the future for all of us,” said Triawan Munaf, the head of the Creative Economy Bureau of Indonesia as he opened the second day of Ideafest 2015. The event was held in Jakarta Convention Center in Senayan, where more than 800 people attended the seminars, talkshows, and conferences on ideas and how they can change the way people live.

Ideafest04

Among the keynote speakers, Tulisan’s Melissa Sunjaya was one of them. Being the first conference in the morning, people queued up in front of the gates and when it finally opened at 10 a.m., they rushed to get the best seats in the room. The huge room was filled with enthusiasm, as DJ Hogi warmed them up before Sarah Sechan as the host introduced Melissa and Carline on to the stage.

Sitting along with Carline Darjanto of CottonInk and moderated by Dien Tirto Buwono, they discussed the creative process behind the retail business and how the company operates while having a creative background in the session: Anatomy of Modern Indonesian Brands.

Ideafest05

Melissa shared her story with the audience on how she and her mother built Tulisan from scratch, and how they strived for excellence on every aspect of the business, including the process of planning and calculation of every decision they made as a company. “She is the ideal business partner: the one you can trust to be honest with you the whole time,” said Melissa, as the audience clapped with admiration.

The whole session felt heartwarming as both the speaker talked about their experience in running a business with their own partner. The sincere tone in their speech and the confident gestures made the audience realized however strict and discipline they are in running their business, they are both human after all.

S+N: Sarah and Neil’s Wedding Celebration

Posted on Life, Travel | 4 Comments

S+N_11_580px-4

My mother Didi and I are crazy about dancing. I had a back injury from this activity in 2008. It was then, when I met Doctor Neil. I was another one of his many problematic female patients. He was extremely sexy, polite, and caring. He had all the qualities I needed to get better. In fact, when we first went to his clinic, there was an Indonesian magazine lying around in his waiting room where Dr. Neil was listed as one of this universe’s top ten eligible bachelors.

When we were called in to his medical room, my mother and I walked in together because we knew we always appeared to be a very docile duet. When Dr. Neil adjusted Didi, my mother screamed, “Aduh, gila, enak banget.” Meaning: “Ooh, crazy, so good!” as we heard his staff outside the chamber giggling away from Didi’s signature comment. After the adjustment, Didi immediately told Dr. Neil that he was very handsome and if he was single, he should join us for salsa dancing. He blushed and answered he was together with a girl and that she would not be happy if he went dancing with us.

After a couple of treatments, Didi and I tried again: to persuade him to join our salsa- tango party team. His good looks would make us a very desirable team. We were so delighted to find out he was heart broken from a recent atomic break-up. We took his desperation as an opportunity to convince him in taking a series of salsa-tango classes by buying a pair of shiny silver dancing shoes. “If you dance well, you will get all the girls!,” Didi said.

580x580_SN_02

Didi and I really wanted the sexy Dr. Neil to be happy, so we began a serious match making service for him. We started hooking him up with several girls from the dancing community. From all the efforts, we made two short scores: one was my beautiful young cousin and another one was Indonesia’s Salsa champion. Neither of them was a right match for him. He told me these girls were all very beautiful, but he could not find a satisfying conversation with any of them. I told him it was normal to be that way, I, myself could not get a satisfying conversation with many girls. But as I said those words to him,  Sarah’s face suddenly popped in my head.

So I told Neil about my one true best friend by the name, Sarah. If I were a man, she would be the only woman to love. Sarah is passionate, witty, and organized in what I labelled ‘a mentally deranged’ cleaning habit. She does not fall in love easily, the only opening to her heart is through soulful words and music. I remembered when I invited Neil and Sarah to our regular dancing nights, Neil did a back flip and Sarah got excited. Since then, the two started texting each other. I could see from my best friend’s eyes that she was falling for this sushi boy. Her eyes would lit up every time a text message came from him.

580x580_SN_03

After a couple of fun years, I suddenly received a hasty call from Sarah. We met and she expressed to me her impatience with Neil’s uncertainty about their love affair. I told her she should also be firmed with her mind on this. Although it did not mattered what I had to say, I let her babble away with all her explosive emotions. In the same week, I called Neil and asked, “What’s the plan?!” Neil had told me about proposing to Sarah about a year ago. He kept on waiting for the perfect moment, perfect ring, and perfect music that he never got the chance to take action.

That day, I pushed him so hard to get a ring – ANY RING! I told him his true intentions is what matters most. Now we are running out of time. In my head: Sarah was driving me crazy too. I told him to just go get a rubber band, or a hello kitty plastic ring; or (to go really insane) get a giant gold bling- bling puma ring from Cartier. For a moment, I thought Neil was going to follow my desperate advice. I think that became the biggest test for Neil’s genuine love to Sarah: to follow his heart or to follow my devilish suggestions. In the end, he firmly stuck to his over-complicated plan in proposing her.

It became a very good lesson for me too. Love is not about demanding from one another. Love is not about becoming the other person’s vision. Love is about accepting each other’s differences. Love is about embracing each other’s mistakes. Today, Love is about Sarah and Neil. I love you both deeply.

Triples kisses, Melissa Sunjaya

On March 6th, 2015 Sarah Sechan and Neil Furuno made a vow to each other. Filmed in Los Angeles, the following video by Michał Górzyński celebrates their loving journey in an intimate wedding ceremony and reception with their closest friends and family. The music “End of the Rainbow” was written and performed by Sandhy Sandoro to complement this graceful union.

Wonder: A Film by Michał Górzyński

Wonder_580px

‘Wonder’ is a film by Michał Górzyński which features a tango performance by Melissa Sunjaya and Gennysam Delos Reyes Alcantara from the Los Sueños Association in Singapore. It was filmed in Jakarta, in Melissa’s grandmother’s house, where she grew up. The music ‘Desilusión’ was composed by Pablo Motta from Buenos Aires. In this piece, Pablo played the piano and double bass with two other musicians: Anna Kostyuchek – Violin and Ginger Murphy – Cello.

The Argentine tango is a unique dance depicting a dialogue between two people. Every action is like a sentence and dancing through a song is akin to completing a whole conversation. In social dancing, a Tango is never choreographed. For both the leader and his partner it is about listening, not only to the music tempo but to the movements of each other. The emotion and drama inherent to the tango is the reason why many call it “the dance of life.”

All great tango dancers focus on three things: being utterly grounded to the core of the body, breathing tall, and maintaining balance while creating an internal rotation along the spine. From a top view, the movements of two people dancing Tango often illustrates the symbol of infinity (∞). The tango is a spiritual dance in which two minds unite.

The latest Wonder will be available at Tulisan Boutiques on February 25, 2015.

Just Love

FW14_GREETING_FEB-2015_580px

Once the Romans were romantic drunks,
Naked and wild acting like punks.
Marked on the fourteenth day of the second month,
Where flowers become the main hunt,
And chocolate a great stunt.
To whisper the words held close to the heart,
before they dissipate and break apart.
Becoming the hallmark of the year,
Celebrating a lifetime full of cheer.

May your valentines be filled with the joy from your loved ones. Cherish what you have!

Unveiling the Mask: Batavia Hotel Time Capsule Launch

JOU_150209_BTVLNC_01

In welcoming the symbolic Chinese New Year of the goat, we recently showcased the launch of our exclusive Batavia Hotel Time Capsule Limited Edition. Derived from the story of Batavia Hotel where the main character is a goat, Melissa Sunjaya shared to the room of people who were given a golden masks the symbolic meaning behind their concealment. Batavia Hotel is a means to portray the masks everyone wears in their daily life. It is a story of romance narrated through the eyes of the protagonist who conceals the pain and loss of the love of her life – the goat-head man who strayed from the truth and dissolves in a world of deceit and luxury.

This special edition is a precise reproduction of the Beach Bag with much advance quality featuring a custom serigraph art print. With only 12 pieces offered on the launch, each tote was packaged nicely in a wooden box where you will find a hand-stitched hardbound book of the Batavia Hotel Story.

In line with the launch of the Batavia Hotel Time Capsule was the introduction of two new colors from the Fall/Winter 2014 – 2015, the Plume Prints Edition. The two shades introduced were Light Snow and Smokey Night, where each purchase was accompanied by a special Plume Fortune: a red feather including a special word of charm.

New Shades for the New Year

Plume: Light Snow Traveller’s Clutch

As the new year calls for a time for reflection, the passing month of January invites us to recall the preceding years with an open arm as we welcome the new with a (hopefully) light heart. Still giving the spotlight to the Fall/Winter 2014-2015 collection, last January, we presented to you another set of our ‘Plume’ collection featuring two contrasting shades of Light Snow and Smokey Night. ‘Plume’ is an Art Nouveau inspired illustration of an owl, where the forms and function of the designs were reconstructed to suit the daily habits and lifestyles on a greater scale.

As we mentioned previously, this Fall/Winter 2014-2015 collection digs deeper to explore the primal instincts of human beings finding connections between our subconscious and the rest of life. The contradictory shades featured extends a basic human condition summed by the words of jewellery designer Vivianna Torun Bulow-Hube, “Where the sun shines strong, there will always be deep shadows.” Giving thought to the idea that darkness will always walk together with lightness. With the new year 2015, Tulisan invites you to embrace both shades of life with Plume and carry it with pride.
